Blocked drains and toilets are a common nuisance that many homeowners have to deal with at some point. There are several common causes of blockages that can lead to these frustrating issues.
One of the most common causes of blockages in drains and toilets is the buildup of debris such as hair, grease, soap scum, and food particles. Over time, these materials can accumulate in the pipes and cause a blockage. In addition to this, flushing items down the toilet that should not be flushed, such as wipes, sanitary products, or paper towels, can also lead to blockages.
Another common cause of blockages is tree roots invading sewer lines. As trees grow, their roots can extend underground and infiltrate pipes, causing blockages and potential damage to the plumbing system.
In some cases, structural issues within the pipes themselves can also contribute to blockages. This may include pipe misalignment or collapse due to age or wear and tear.
To prevent blocked drains and toilets, it is important to be mindful of what is being flushed down the toilet or washed down the drain. Regular maintenance such as using drain guards or strainers can help catch debris before it causes a blockage. If you do experience a blockage, it is best to address it promptly to avoid further damage or inconvenience.
Overall, understanding the common causes of blockages for drains and toilets can help homeowners take proactive measures to prevent these issues from occurring in the first place. By being aware of potential causes and practicing good plumbing habits, you can minimize the chances of experiencing a blocked drain or toilet in your home.
A blocked toilet is one of the most frustrating plumbing problems, causing immediate inconvenience and potential water damage. Knowing how to respond quickly can help resolve the issue before it escalates.
The first step when dealing with a blocked toilet is to stop flushing. Repeated flushing can cause the bowl to overflow, leading to a messy cleanup. If water is rising, removing excess water with a bucket can help prevent spills.
A plunger is one of the most effective tools for unclogging toilets. Using a high-quality plunger with a flange can create a strong seal around the drain. Pushing and pulling the plunger forcefully can help dislodge the blockage. If the plunger does not work, a toilet auger can be used to break up stubborn clogs deeper in the pipes.
Chemical drain cleaners should be avoided as they can damage pipes and create hazardous fumes. Instead, natural solutions such as baking soda and vinegar can be poured into the toilet to help break down minor blockages.
If DIY methods do not resolve the issue, a professional plumber should be called. Persistent toilet blockages may indicate deeper plumbing problems, such as tree root intrusion or damaged pipes, which require expert attention.
Preventing toilet blockages is possible by ensuring only toilet paper and human waste are flushed. Educating household members or employees about proper toilet use can help reduce the risk of clogs.

Quick response to query and were able to fix my hot water system on the day. Fabulous service from everyone I interacted with and the plumber and his apprentice were highly professional and kept me in the loop. Highly recommend.
The tradesperson who came to our property was extremely polite. Although the problem was not resolved he was able to give more information via the drain cam to enable us to investigate further. Very happy with the service & we would highly recommend them & definitely use Howrah Plumbing again, special shout out to Brody.

Big Thank you to Simon and Nathan. They did well and on time as I requested. Thank you thank you 🙏. 5 stars * absolutely.
Was able to book online including a prefered time, which was easy to do. Turned up on time. Plumber was polite, professional and was quickly able to fix what turned out to be a small issue and also checked to make sure there was nothing bigger wrong.
A reliable plumber in Mornington should be able to offer same-day service for urgent issues like blocked drains and toilets.
